Betrayal

The expression on this kid's face from this magazine ad looked somewhat accusatory to me. So this is what I came up with.

Maybe someone traded his Capt'n Crunch for a healthy breakfast cereal.

IMDb.com SYNOPSIS: A long long time ago a wizard was put to death, but he swore vengeance on the townsfolk that did him in, particularly Arthur Kelly's family. Arthur had done the final graces on him when he came back to life as Mr. Jack the Pumpkin Man. The Kellys proliferated through the years, and when some devil-may-care teens accidentally unleash Jack-O, young Sean Kelly must stop him somehow as his suburban world is accosted and the attrition rate climbs.

Steve Latshaw produced/directed the 1995 film Jack-O, about a pumpkinheaded demon. This cheesy horror flick is a combination of a terrible story with awful acting but there were some cool death scenes. Jack-O is the type of movie to see with a group of friends, drink beer, make comments and laugh a lot. It features Scream Queen and Queen of B Movies Linnea Quigley, Rebecca Wicks, and Ryan Latshaw.

Check out Jack-O (1995) VHS and DVD
covers that I posted here last year.

You can watch the full 1995 film "Jack-O" online at the three links below, but the film is incorrectly labeled as "Jack Olantern" which is actually a 2004 film with a similar story. What's confusing is that the opening of the 1995 film is titled "Jacko Lantern" not "Jack-O".

Halloween Treasures

One thing I've noticed since we started living here is that the flea markets around here are pretty good! So as usual, on Sundays we go to the flea market close to our house.  Some days are better than others, but that can be true about anything.  This Sunday was just a good day and sadly we didn't bring enough cash.   I got a few little things that were nice, like a choker for a dollar and a Sims 3 game for also a dollar. Yep, Sims is a little geeky guilty pleasure of mine.

We did find two items that were just really awesome finds!  First one was a Labyrinth lunchbox.  I have to clean it up, but an awesome deal for only a few dollars. I hope I can get the glitter out of his hair, I guess the former owner wanted to dress him up a bit.

The second find is my favorite, we found a vintage 1988 Dracula Halloween prop.  He was still in his box and was excited to find out when we got home that he worked!  He looks new and like nobody every really used him. Isn't he awesome!

On the way out after over 3 hours and no money left in our pockets, I find some Halloween pillows that would of been so great for the couch. Two for a dollar, why??  The gentleman suggested hitting the ATM but let us be honest, a huge ATM fee for just one dollar, nahhhh ... just was not meant to be!

Hallowe'En

The ghosts of all things past parade,
Emerging from the mist and shade
That hid them from our gaze,
And, full of song and ringing mirth,
In one glad moment of rebirth,
And again they walk the ways of earth
As in the ancient days.

The beacon light shines on the hill,
The will-o'-wisps the forests fill
With flashes filched from noon;
And witches on their broomsticks spry
Speed here and yonder in the sky,
And lift their strident voices high
Unto the Hunter's Moon.

The air resounds with tuneful notes
From myriads of straining throats,
All hailing Folly Queen;
So join the swelling choral throng,
Forget your sorrow and your wrong,
In one glad hour of joyous song
To honor Hallowe'en!

Frankenstein inspired

Almost two years ago now I did an online art course with MOMA - Experimenting with Collage. One of our assignments was to do an altered book project. I was a little tentative at first because, well, altering a book felt a little sacrilegious. But I suppose in these days of digital everything re purposing books into works of art isn't so bad.

First, I found a hard cover copy of one of the Outlander books lying around the lunch room at my husband's place of work. Lots of people leave books there they are finished with and don't want anymore.

I was going to go with a theme because the name of the book was An Echo in the Bone, but I gave that up in favor of doing whatever I felt like. There are a couple of pages worthy of the word 'spooky' I think. This is one...

Altered book project page

Damien Hurst's show had been here and I had a little booklet with pics of some of his works in it. If you look closely at these Frankenstein inspired pages you will see his diamond skull peeking out.

The face does have something to do with Frankenstein but I'm sorry I can't remember now. And I don't have the book anymore. It seems to have disappeared!

The Creeper Gallery

I just recently relocated to New Jersey due to Mr Halloween's new job and we couldn't wait to explore everything around us. We took a trip to Lambertville, NJ and New Hope, PA last October.  The towns are just separated by the Delaware River.  They are both amazing historical downtown's to visit and the old Victorian homes were just a bonus for me.

One place that we really enjoyed was in New Hope and it was called The Creeper Gallery. Since we visited around Halloween time it made the trip just a little bit more fun.  Here is a description of the shop from their web page:

D.L. Marian and Danielle Deveroux have partnered to create a completely unique
gallery experience in historic New Hope, Pennsylvania.
The Creeper Gallery houses Gothic fine art, curated various antiques and peculiars
by both owner-artists.
Our art-design aesthetic revolves around the Victorian era and anything dark,
strange or unusual.
Macabre life-size historical figures, mixed media assemblage, rogue taxidermy,
religiosity, medical, memento mori and more.

We got to talk to D.L. Marian who was working that day and Mr Halloween probably talked her to death!  While they talked I walked around the gallery taking pictures and taking everything in. There was even a little basket of toys for the ghost Madeline, an 8 year girl that perished there in a fire in the 1700s. I think it was one of my favorite stops we made on the trip.

My phone was in the process of dying and needing to be replaced so not some of pics didn't turn out the greatest.  Please enjoy the gallery below to check out The Creeper Gallery.

Storm or Apocalypse?

So, last Thursday evening we both fell asleep on our respective couches while in front of the tv. Nothing unusual there. But at some point soon after a crazy ass storm hit. It was the thunder, wind, and hail banging on the windows that woke me up.

I immediately looked over to the window sill where I'd last seen one of our cats...not there. Clad only in my pjs I threw myself off the couch and out the back door into our small garden. Trees branches and thorny bougainvillea were whipping around, rain and hail were pelting down (hail...in the Persian Gulf?) and although I could hear one of the cats I couldn't see her. I was in a bit of a blind panic I must admit.

As you can imagine, going from a nap on the couch to a scene from the apocalypse was a bit disconcerting. I was out there in that back yard trying to out scream the sounds of wind and thunder! I finally narrowed down the pitiful mewling I was hearing to under the bar-b-que. She poked her head out and I quickly scooped up cat #1 and retreated inside.

I put her down on the floor and raced upstairs to grab some towels. Coming back downstairs I noticed there were drops of blood on the floor...oh my god, she's hurt! I yelled instructions at my husband to figure out where she was bleeding while I then ran out the front door to see if I could find the other cat.

Outside the wind was blowing but not as strong. I could see a large tree branch down across the way and there were torrents of rain water pouring down the street. The rain was cold and by this point so was I as I was soaking wet! I ran back inside and grabbed my bath robe. On my way back downstairs my husband informed me that cat #1 seemed uninjured.

Back outside I finally spied cat #2 wading through ankle deep water towards our neighbours place. I scooped him up and returned inside where I quickly discovered I was the one bleeding. I'd cut my finger on something. The worst of the storm came and went in maybe 15 minutes. Whew! All safe and accounted for.

These are some scenes from around our compound the following morning...

We know the people who live here.
They couldn't get out the front door at one point.

What's on tonight: HOLIDAYS (2016)

Just watched this, I liked it. The Halloween segment could have taken place on any night, the story isn't really Halloween related. I actually liked the Valentine's Day segment the best. I loved the Easter Bunny Jesus, looks creepy as hell.

Press Release:
HOLIDAYS will have its world premiere at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival on April 14th, followed by a global day-and-date release on April 15th on digital and VOD platforms, and then a U.S. theatrical run starting on April 22nd. The film was produced by John Hegemans Distant Corners Entertainment in association with XYZ Films, and will be distributed by Vertical Entertainment and XYZ Films.

IMDb SYNOPSIS: HOLIDAYS is an anthology feature film that puts a uniquely dark and original spin on some of the most iconic and beloved holidays of all time. The film challenges our folklore, traditions and assumptions, making HOLIDAYS a celebration of the horror on those same special days' year after year. A collaboration of some of Hollywood's most distinct voices.
