Spook spotlight: the London After Midnight vampire

Here's a gruesome ghoul you may not be acquainted with it's the unnamed vampire character from one of the most famous lost films of all time: London after Midnight, a 1927 silent movie starring the master of disguises Lon Chaney Sr. The terrifying visage of Chaney in this role was the stuff of nightmares for many a monster movie fan and inspired filmmakers and writers like Stephen King. Here's what we know about this obscure cur:
  • Played by: Lon Chaney in the lost 1927 silent movie
  • Known for: Being the face of Channel 9s Creature Features in the 1970s
  • Aliases: The man in the beaver hat, piranha-mouth, Bulging-eyes-Bob
  • Sick of his mother telling him: Its not polite to point

The Changeling

Life has been hectic...more on that later -- so I've found myself woefully behind in my posts. Also in the Halloween spirit. So to try and get the old ectoplasm flowing I decided last week to watch The Changeling. I was going to save it for Mat Night but I was particularly tired this day and needed some couch time. Besides there will be other things going on Mat Night to keep us busy.

So, I first came to know about this film because an old boyfriend loved it and thought that, other than The Wicker Man (1973), it was one of the scarier movies he'd seen. Now maybe he'd described enough of the plot to me that I ended up thinking I'd seen it. I was familiar with the bouncing ball scene and I remember there'd been a tragedy and a subsequent move by George C Scott's character but after that everything else was like watching something I hadn't seen before! And that was great because this is a really good spooky vengeful ghost story; similar to What Lies Beneath (2000) or Lady in White (1988). Definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it.

Watch VIDEO VENGEANCE'S HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR MIXTAPE OF HORRORS

Welcome to the Modern Superior and Video Vengeance Halloween Spooktacular Mixtape of Horrors! Two hours of the best seasonal channel-surfing you have never actually had - until now!

Hey look, NIGHTMARES is on that one has some cool segments right? I think I saw in the TV GUIDE that THE UNCANNY would be playing later on tonight, I wonder what that one is all about? I sure could use an ice cold Coors Lite and a Big Mac with some candy on the side though and does anyone have Halloween safety tips theyd like to share?

This collection of Halloween appropriate commercials, movie segments and more has been presented largely without high-levels of editing, remixing or twiddling (as in, I am not trying to wring unintentional laughs out of the film segments and would rather you sit back and dig into them straight-up, mixtape style); no, this is more like a block of television dial-spinning designed to theme your evening for about two-hours and change. Feel free to pair with your favourite snacks, a group of your best friends, and a few beers.

I hope you enjoy it! This description, video mixtape and sources for the videos originally posted last year at ModernSuperior.com.

Spook spotlight: Scarycrow

Most farmer's scarecrows are the cute and cuddly type, with a patchwork quilt face and a stitched-on grin of friendliness. But this maize mannequin is monstrously morose if not downright zombiefied. Crows and humans alike you've been warned. Here are more fun facts about Scarycrow:
  • Sick of: The dry cleaners excuse for why the bird dropping stains cant come out
  • Catch-phrase: Thats the last straw
  • Little-known fact: Auditioned for The Wizard of Oz, but lost the part after changing the lyrics to If I Could Only Eat Some Brains
  • Known for: Corny jokes, stuffing himself at mealtime, always picking the short straw

Enter the Spirits on Sproat Facebook video contest

Here's another great reason to visit Spirits on Sproat: you can win two VIP admission tickets to Midnight Terror Haunted House in Oak Lawn--a $70 value and a great opportunity to experience Chicagoland's best commercial haunted attraction without having to wait in a long line!

Here's what you need to do:
  1. Take video during your 2017 visit to Spirits on Sproat.
  2. Post it to our Facebook page (at fb.com/spiritsonsproat) by October 24. (We'd also love for you to share photos taken during your visit, so post those, too.)
  3. Like us on Facebook.
  4. Share your posted video on your own Facebook timeline. Make sure the post is public.
We'll judge the best video and award the winner the two tickets, which they can pick up from Michael Myers himself between October 26 and Halloween night.

A few tips on taking and submitting videos:
  • We prefer horizontal video over vertical video (it fills up and looks better on the screen)
  • We especially love footage of our live scarers (like Michael Myers and Jason) creeping up and scaring people.
  • Please aim for a reasonable video length; not too short (at least 30 seconds) or too long (not longer than 3 minutes) please.
  • Do not post video recorded in past years. Only post fresh video recorded between Oct. 1 and Oct. 24, 2017, please.
  • We will contact the chosen winner privately via Facebook on October 25 to arrange pickup of the tickets. Prepare to show a valid ID when you pick up the tickets.
Good luck, and happy Halloween season!

Hellions is a 2015 Canadian horror film directed by Bruce McDonald, written by Pascal Trottier and starring Chloe Rose, Rossif Sutherland, Rachel Wilson, Peter Dacunha, Luke Bilyk, and Robert Patrick. The film was an official selection of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival lineup and also screened at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

SYNOPSIS: Strange trick-or-treaters plague conflicted teenager Dora Vogel (Chloe Rose) at her isolated home on Halloween. Under siege by forces she cant understand, Dora must defend both body and soul from relentless Hellions, dead-set on possessing something Dora will not give them. With officer Corman (Robert Patrick: Terminator 2: Judgment Day) in tow will Dora survive and kill these forces of evil? From director Bruce McDonald (Ponytpool), set in a visually haunting landscape, Hellions redefines the boundaries of horror with its potent brew of Halloween iconography, teenage angst and desperate survival.

The Hollywood Reporter and IndieWire criticized both the film and its direction. The reviewers felt that although Hellions showed promise, it ultimately did not live up to its potential. The A.V. Club named it #3 on its list of 20 worst movies of 2015. At the same time, horror websites such as Coming Soon and Bloody Disgusting reviewed it favorably and both outlets praised the film for its imagery and cinematic inventiveness. RogerEbert.com also commended the film, calling it a "perfect, light midnight movie" that, despite its shortcomings, "gets the job done". The Blu-ray release of Hellions was called a "must-add" to everybody's October watch list by Bloody Disgusting.
